Summer planting
Contrary to popular opinion, summer planting is fine as long as adequate water is provided throughout any prolonged dry periods. This allows you to take advantage of increased summer growth.
June 2018

Our Update last month drew considerable interest, particularly as many people thought we would have closed by now.

Our intention is still to wind up the business by the end of winter.

It is great to see our remaining plants go out to good homes, and some lines are already gone. The stocklist below includes those plants remaining from last month’s stocklist, and includes others we have in reasonable numbers. Again, there are many species we have lesser numbers of, particularly of the more unusual species.

As on the last stocklist, prices have been simplified so that plants in the higher price bands are now being sold at the standard price. In addition, all stock is being offered at wholesale prices, and we are prepared to consider any reasonable offer for bulk orders of particular lines.

Species that we are carrying in large numbers include Cordyline australis (cabbage tree), Dacrycarpus dacrydioides (kahikatea), Dacrydium cupressinum (rimu), Rhopalostylis sapida (nikau) and Phormium tenax (flax). The biggest numbers of these are in tubes or PB3/4s and are ideal for growing on to larger grades or for reveg plantings.

Website orders have been very strong as people have realised they can still source some of the more uncommon delights. We encourage you to help NZ’s lesser-grown treasures by ensuring they stay in cultivation. Some remain in existence only because cultivated stock has been available when the naturally-occurring plants have been exterminated in the wild by predators or changing land use. Head to oratianatives.co.nz and have a browse around.

Computer Meltdown:
Our computer system suffered a major meltdown and we are now working with a simplified system to tide us over until we stop trading.

We are fortunate to have retrieved most of the data, but several days of emails from late last month have been lost for all time. If you've sent us an email that we haven't replied to, please resend it.

Nursery Hardware:
Other growers may be interested in purchasing hygiene trays, transport trays (57 x 29cm), 5cm and 7cm tubes, root-trainers or other nursery equipment. If so, please do make us an offer.

Opening Days 2018:
While our website and phone message list Monday, Tuesday and Saturday 9am - 4.30pm as the three working days when you can be sure to find someone at the nursery to help you, there are usually staff present on Wednesday and Thursday as well. However, it pays to check.

Friday and Sunday we remain closed unless by appointment.

Happy planting.
