Plant propagation
It is preferable to propagate plants by seeds rather than cuttings or by division. This ensures maximum genetic diversity is maintained.

December 2016

Oratia Update – December 2016

Our last newsletter drew a number of enquiries from people keen to see a specialist native plant nursery continue.

But all such arrangements take time, and as we explained in September’s Update, after Christmas, Oratia will be operating on reduced hours unless one of these possibilities comes to fruition.

Christmas and New Year Holiday Hours:

Open until Friday 23 Dec.
Closed from Sat 24 Dec until Tues 3 Jan.
Open Wed 4 Jan.
Closed Thurs 6 and Fri 7 Jan.

Open Sat 7 Jan.

Opening Days 2017:

Monday, Tuesday and Saturday.
9am - 4.30pm.

We close for Statutory Holidays but will open on the first day after (eg Wed 4 Jan).
Visits outside these days may be made by appointment. (info@oratianatives.co.nz; ph: 818 6467 or 8130229)

Forward orders:

Some forward orders will still be possible.

While we are no longer propagating stock for general purposes, we have plant material that will not be uplifted until April next year. If you are looking for plants that can be propagated and uplifted within that time-frame we will be happy to take forward orders. The amount of notice required for such orders will depend on the species, but many will grow well though the summer months if propagated soon.

A deposit for such orders will be required, and a clear undertaking that the plants will be taken and paid for within the agreed time.

Stock still available:

Numbers are steadily reducing but there is still plenty to choose from. Get in quick while you still can.

Interested in buying a nursery?

It is not too late to look at new possibilities for a New Year.

We are prepared to consider a sale of the business with the land being leased, or a sale of both land and business.
We have reduced staff numbers but our core staff are still keen to continue the work they love.
Stock material is still waiting for action, and production could be ramped up again at any time.

With other plant suppliers also closing, the opportunities are increasing – and with our reducing stock levels, the purchase value of the business is decreasing. What more could anyone want!

And finally ... Season’s Greetings!

People with an interest in native plants are a wonderful lot and have enhanced our lives over the years.
May you all have a joyful, restful and revitalising holiday season, with very best wishes for 2017.
