Serendipitous supply
When the Monarch Butterfly NZ Trust wanted to give a gift of plants, locally sourced from Rarangi Beach, east of Blenheim, they came to Oratia. Not only could we provide an eco-sourced species, it was also a plant which had since disappeared from the region!

This is the Trust's story.

Kunzea ericoides var. linearis
Height: 12m;  Spread: 5m
Tree
This is to be considered a species rather than a variety. It is threatened and found around the Waitemata harbour in North Shore and the odd locations on Aucklands Gulf islands and up north.

Growing tips:

I agree it should be a species. In the dunes of the eastern Aupouri Peninsula (where it is not uncommon) it flowers in late January/February whereas the other kanuka of the far north flowers in early to late December. It is a much smaller tree, but very easy to grow from seed.
