Growing tips:

grows well with chicken compost- lots of it and frequent application- at least in the initial stages. Otherwise it is difficult. So far it is not susceptable to rabbit brousing and seems relatively spray hardy. And it is beautiful. Full sun, wind -near the sea edge. But will grow in the garden in sun if fed well. Reroots itself as it grows. I understand that lizards like it. Fantastic plant! Regards, Beth

Thanks Beth, It certainly is a hardy plant - it makes you wonder how it can be nationally critically endangered. Now known from just one natural population. It has also been successfully established in a number of sites around Nelson. Perhaps being vulnerable to browsing animals and coastal erosion is a cause but I suspect a dysfunctional sex system is the main problem. Not sure how it does it in the wild but most commercial stock seen is female.
