Growing tips: On 19/05/2011, Christine said:
A very beautiful tree with large tropical looking dark green leaves. The big leaves are rather droopy when young, but it outgrows this. We have the freezing Wellington temperatures here, often down to -3 in winter, with snow on the mountains behind us. I have a 10 foot Pisonia NZ native which is rampant and very strong in its growth. It survived a record low of -4 with no problems at all. This season seems to be a mast year for the tree, it is smothered flowers and pods which I'll shortly have to remove before the pods become black and sticky. Tui feeds off the flowers. I brought the tree as a 1-foot seedling and grew it in a covered porch until it was 7 feet tall and too big to pot on. It wasn't all that happy looking, but once planted out, away it went. My tree is growing in straight/fine sand, with good lighting but little full sun. It is sheltered behind a garage and surrounded by other native trees, especially Tarata. I think the good drainage and forest-type of shelter but with bright light, is the key to growing this tree in a cooler climate. It has never been fed and simply thrives in the very poor sand, withstanding drought fairly well. Highly recommended.
