Family
Cyperaceae
Distribution
Found growing in a range of conditions throughout New Zealand, including the Kermadec, North, South and Stewart Islands.
Description
A densely tufted sedge growing up to 50 cm high, very similar to C.testaceae and differing largely in its colour, ranging from shiny green to bronze with brownish shades. The channelled leaves are 1.5-2.5 mm wide and are sharply scabrid: {} along their margins. The flowering stems are 35-75 cm when first produced, but as the seeds mature they elongate to 2 m or so and lie along the ground.
Cultivation
Prefers a sunny spot with reasonable moisture levels although it can stand quite dry conditions, wind, sun and semi-shade. It is very hardy, needing virtually no maintenance apart from pulling out old leaves to allow new shoots to develop and prevent ‘matting.'
It can be used to under-plant existing vegetation, either on its own or with other species as well as a border in an open situation, and they also look good in planters which allow their leaves to fall to the ground.
